Not a bargainSep 03, 2011
By Chandler Staying with a friend for a few days who wasn't well equipped for the cooking I was about to do but had no real need for a set of pots and pans due to the practice of eating out constantly, I stopped by Dollar General to pick up some cookware just for a few days. I had a $5 off coupon and found this set for $15 so I thought it worth it, as how bad could they really be?
Bad.
First, it tells you not to ever use high heat on any of these. What? Trying to boil water for pasta over medium heat is gonna take some time, huh? But as soon as I turned it on to make a grilled sandwich I realized why. This has "old school Teflon". Rarely is this ever used anymore. It was found maybe 10 years ago that the Teflon they were using created a smoke that was toxic and even killed any birds in the house. If it was scratched off via using a spatula or during wash, the tiny bits that then wound up in your food was a carcinogen. I haven't seen this Teflon in years. Cheap yes, but there is a reason companies use a different non-stock coating. As soon as I saw the fumes it emitted over just medium heat I knew...the smell of Teflon and the fumes coating that sandwich.
But let's ignore that fact and say you are healthy as a horse and work for Teflon and don't even care about that. You won't even be able to cook a grilled cheese in this due to the distribution of heat. While the edges were burned black, the middle was still white and buttery.
And due to the thin metal of the pan, everything cooks too fast yielding poor results.
The warning sheet tells you never to put them in the dishwasher so you'll have lots of time over the sink with these as well. Why can't you? That's when the non-stick coating falls off.
Being so lightweight they also don't sit well on a burner so that the handle weighs one side down and all the butter or oil will lean to one side while the other is dry.
The handle is plastic as well.
The set contains one small frying pan and 3 pots and their lids. Which total 7 pieces.
That said, you can go to TJ Maxx and get Calpahalon or Circulon pro cookware for just slightly more and simply for the fact that you can throw your pots in the dishwasher and not have to spend the time cleaning them and time is money...next time I'll just make myself make the drive further away to TJ Maxx and see what's on sale if I want a bargain. This turned out instead to be a waste of money rather than a savings of it.
The plus side? Nothing at all stuck to the pan. While I know that eventually wears off in pans like this as it doesn't typically stay on and bubbles up, I give it credit for being one smooth easy to use surface right out of the box right now!
HORRIBLE SIZING!Jan 23, 2012
By Caaron These pots and pans are sized for children! I was extremely disappointed and will be returning them ASAP! They are big enough to cook for two, but that's it!
You get what you pay forNov 16, 2011
By Stephanelly This set is probably the worst set I have ever purchased, but seriously - you can't beat the price - it has honestly "lasted" for about a year - the insides are rusted, the lids are falling apart, and the handles are loose. I say "lasted" because I RARELY cook! That's why I thought I didn't need anything fancy, but I would definitely recemmend a different set.
