 Dangerous fire hazard! Turns itself on...May 15, 2011

Avoid this brand at all costs, and if you already have one, return it!
If you do a Google search for 'magic chef microwave turns itself on' you will find dozens and dozens of complaints and reviews where consumers have this exact issue. This appliance will literally turn itself on.
It did it a few times randomly at first, and I questioned whether I had *really* heard the beep telling me my food was done, because when I'd go in the kitchen it would still be running. Then after two of these episodes I realized it was acting up. It was starting up again by itself for 2 minutes after the cooking cycle was complete. I left the door open after that because it made me nervous.
Then one night it came on all by itself...completely freaky and scared me to death. I ran in the kitchen and noticed it was set for 2:34, and that happened once more a few days later. I unplugged it all night. After that, I plugged it in again and it didn't give me any trouble all week.
This past Thursday, I came home from work to a horrible electrical fire odor: I smelled it outside and was scared to open the door. Just as I thought it was the magic chef microwave, which had obviously been turning itself on again while I was gone and it had caught fire! I have added an image of what it looked like. It even shattered the glass turntable.
Three days later my house still smells like fire, but I am lucky to HAVE a house. DO NOT BUY THIS BRAND AT ANY COST!

"lazylady"
the size given matched what I saw on the website, so I was able to place this oven in the space I had for it.
Works nicely - quiet and easy to use.

Turning itself on? Bizarre. I don't think that's happened to me.
I am not a big microwave person. I use it to heat up my coffee and that's about it.
That said, it came with the house and I'd like something that looks more sleek.

I have owned this for less than 3 years and it has had very light use, a couple minutes a day, and it's now dead. Stay away from Magic Chef if you want something to last. I have another brand in a different area of my house and it's going strong after 25 years.
